Investors and entrepreneurs pay up to $15,000 for rare access to Chinese factories and innovation ecosystems as global innovation race heats up

A growing number of tech investors and entrepreneurs are flocking to China to witness its technological advancements, with some paying thousands of dollars for access to Chinese factories and innovation ecosystems. This influx reflects growing concerns about China's lead in advanced manufacturing and cutting-edge technologies.
Robert Wu, CEO of Shanghai-based data research firm Baiguan, has organised two tours for more than two dozen investors, entrepreneurs and executives, charging up to $15,000 for a five-day programme. Around half the participants in Wu's tours came from Southeast Asia, indicating a strong interest in China's innovation ecosystem from the region.
China's industrial tourism sector is booming, with the sector pulling in $17.8 billion last year, according to state media. The sector is projected to blow past 300 billion yuan ($44.6 billion) by 2029, indicating a significant growth in interest in China's industrial and technological capabilities.
GloPen, a Shanghai-based tech tour agency, says inquiries jumped 50% in 2026 from mostly European and Singaporean clients. The agency now runs over 100 single-day company tours every month, catering to the growing demand for access to China's innovation ecosystem.
Several high-profile investors and entrepreneurs have made the trip to China, including U.S. investment firms Dimension, Capital Group and Thrive Capital, as well as U.S. tech podcaster Lex Fridman. Rui Ma, founder of Tech Buzz China, has organized 11 tech tours since 2019, indicating a strong interest in China's tech scene from foreign investors and entrepreneurs.
