Daniel Kinahan, a suspected Irish crime boss, has been extradited from Dubai to Ireland and charged with directing a criminal organisation. He was remanded in custody until October 5.

Kinahan was charged with directing a criminal organisation between 18 October 2015 and 6 April 2017. The Kinahan cartel is linked to more than a dozen gangland murders and is suspected of trafficking narcotics into Ireland, the UK, and Spain.

The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Kinahan in April 2022, describing the Kinahan cartel as one of the most dangerous in the world. The group is thought to be the most powerful criminal organisation in Ireland, with an estimated wealth of over €1 billion.

Kinahan was arrested in Dubai in April and had appealed the extradition order, but his attempts were unsuccessful. A large-scale security operation was in place ahead of the hearing, and the Irish Prison Service had acquired a bulletproof and bombproof van to escort high-risk prisoners.
