Iran has discovered over 200 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the southern Fars province, with more than 160 billion cubic meters potentially recoverable, according to Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad.

The discovered natural gas is sweet, with very little hydrogen sulphide, which will help reduce development and operating costs. The discovery includes gas condensate, which has created significant new wealth for the country.

The newly discovered gas field is located in the southern Fars province, and the recoverable volume of the discovered gas is equivalent to one block of the South Pars gas field. According to Paknejad, the discovered gas could supply gas for 15 years.

The discovery comes amid disruptions to Iran's energy sector due to US-Israeli strikes. The country's energy infrastructure, including gas production facilities and oil depots, has been targeted, resulting in significant disruptions to production and transport.

## Why it matters The discovery of new natural gas reserves is significant for Iran, as it could help the country to increase its energy production and reduce its reliance on other sources of energy. The fact that the discovered gas is sweet, with very little hydrogen sulphide, makes it more desirable and easier to extract. However, any new production from the site would likely be years away, and the country's energy sector still faces significant challenges due to the ongoing US-Israeli strikes.

## What happens next The development of the newly discovered gas field will likely be a key priority for Iran's energy sector in the coming years. The country will need to invest in infrastructure and technology to extract and transport the gas, and will also need to navigate the ongoing challenges posed by the US-Israeli strikes. As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, the discovery of new natural gas reserves in Iran could have significant implications for the country's energy security and economy.
