Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has not ruled out running for president or Senate in 2028, she said in an August 2026 interview on ABC's 'This Week' with Jonathan Karl.
When asked about a presidential run, Ocasio-Cortez said she is currently focused on winning the midterms and running for Congress. "I haven't ruled out the possibility, and I'm very humbled to the tremendous amount of support out there," she added. A recent New Hampshire poll showed her leading the prospective Democratic field for the party's presidential nomination.
On the Senate question, Karl asked whether she would challenge fellow New Yorker Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader. Ocasio-Cortez responded that "anything is possible at this juncture."
Ocasio-Cortez has emerged as a leading potential heir to the movement built by Sen. Bernie Sanders. Her openness to either path comes as the Democratic Party undergoes what she described as a generational "renewal," marked by victories from insurgent candidates in recent primaries.
