UK Train Passengers Can Now Use Tickets On Different Operators

UK passengers with cancelled trains will now be able to use services on a different operator, starting from Sunday, 20 September, 2026. This change aims to reduce disruptions and make travel easier for passengers.

The new policy allows passengers to use their original ticket on trains departing within two hours before or after the cancelled service using a direct or reasonable alternative route. They won't need to download a new ticket, but can simply show their original ticket to the inspectors on board.

Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, and Great Western Railway will be included in the cross-operator ticket acceptance scheme. East Midlands Railway will join the scheme at a later date.

According to Alex Robertson, chief executive of Transport Focus, this change is a welcome move that should make it easier for people when services are cancelled. He emphasized the importance of clear information for passengers during disruptions, saying that passengers just want to get where they need to be without worrying about whether their ticket will be accepted on another train.
