IKEA has entered the UK home insurance market through a partnership with Urban Jungle, offering home insurance to customers at the point of sale. According to a GlobalData survey, IKEA is the most-trusted alternative provider for home insurance, with 30% of consumers citing they would be willing to buy a home insurance policy from the company if it were to offer it.
The partnership with Urban Jungle will allow IKEA customers purchasing furniture or home furnishes to be offered contents and buildings home insurance cover in the same transaction. This move reflects the continued market trend towards greater convenience, as more partnerships emerge and embedded insurance gains traction.
In addition to its move into home insurance, IKEA is also launching a second-hand marketplace in the UK, allowing customers to buy and sell pre-owned IKEA products directly with each other. The marketplace, which is already live in seven countries including Sweden and Spain, will be available to IKEA Family members and will allow them to buy and sell pre-owned products without having to use third-party platforms like eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
The second-hand marketplace is part of IKEA's pledge to become climate positive by 2030. From January 1, 2027, buyers on the platform will have to pay a 5% protection fee to fund various costs related to the sale. This move is seen as a way for IKEA to encourage sustainable consumption and reduce waste.
## Why it matters The partnership between IKEA and Urban Jungle, as well as the launch of the second-hand marketplace, reflects the changing landscape of the insurance and retail industries. As consumers increasingly look for convenient and sustainable options, companies like IKEA are adapting to meet these needs. The move into home insurance and second-hand marketplaces is also seen as a way for IKEA to diversify its offerings and stay competitive in a rapidly changing market.
## What happens next As IKEA continues to expand its offerings into new areas, it will be interesting to see how the company navigates the complexities of the insurance and second-hand markets. With the launch of the second-hand marketplace in the UK, IKEA will be competing with established players like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, and will need to differentiate its platform to attract customers. Meanwhile, the partnership with Urban Jungle will allow IKEA to offer its customers a seamless and convenient insurance experience, and will likely be closely watched by other retailers and insurers looking to follow suit.
The Financial Conduct Authority's decision to move Urban Jungle into its Scale-Up Unit is also a significant development, as it will provide the company with dedicated support and guidance as it continues to grow and expand its operations. As the embedded insurance trend continues to gain traction, it will be interesting to see how other companies follow IKEA's lead and explore new partnerships and offerings in this area.
