The Srisailam temple performed a Varuna Yagam from August 7 to propitiate the rain god, seeking abundant rainfall and water security for the region. The five-day ritual, which included various ceremonies and recitations, concluded on August 11 with the Purnahuti ceremony.

The ritual was performed to seek abundant rainfall and water security for the region, as the Nagarjunasagar reservoir has a gross storage capacity of 312.045 TMC but currently holds only 145.65 TMC of water. The reservoir level stands at about 518 feet, significantly below its full reservoir level of 590 feet.

The Varuna Yagam at Srisailam included rituals such as Yagashala Pravesham, Shiva Sankalpam, and Rudra Homam. The Sahasra Ghatabhishekam ritual was performed at the Srisailam temple on August 10.

The Telangana government also conducted a Varuna Yagam at Nagarjunasagar on August 10, seeking abundant rainfall across the Krishna and Godavari river basins. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy participated in the Varuna Yagam at Nagarjunasagar, while Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy initiated the ritual.

## Why it matters The Varuna Yagam comes at a crucial time for Telangana, as the southwest monsoon has crossed the halfway mark but inflows into the Krishna and Godavari river systems remain below expectations. Authorities point out that Telangana’s water security depends not only on rainfall within the State but also on precipitation in the upper catchment areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka, which contribute a major share of flows into both river basins. The ritual is being conducted with the collective prayer that reservoirs, tanks, and rivers receive adequate inflows, groundwater levels improve, and farmers are assured sufficient irrigation water during the ongoing agricultural season.

The current reservoir figures underline the concern, with Nagarjunasagar holding only 145.65 TMC of water, leaving 166.39 TMC of vacant storage. The reservoir level stands at about 518 feet, significantly below its full reservoir level of 590 feet. On the same date last year, the project held around 310.25 TMC, almost reaching full capacity.

## What happens next The successful completion of the Varuna Yagam at Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar is expected to bring relief to the region, which is facing a water crisis due to below-average rainfall. The Telangana government and the temple authorities are hopeful that the ritual will propitiate the rain god and bring abundant rainfall to the region, ensuring water security and a bountiful harvest.
