YouTube is set to change how it counts views on its platform, with a view now counting as soon as a video starts playing, effective August 24th. This change is expected to lead to increased view counts for creators, as the current system requires a user to watch at least 30 seconds of a video for it to count.

The update brings YouTube's view-counting system in line with that of its rivals, TikTok and Instagram, which also count views as soon as a video starts playing. This change is part of YouTube's efforts to simplify its metrics and provide creators with a clearer picture of their exposure.

YouTube will keep its original view metric, now called 'Engaged views', accessible to creators through its Analytics tools. This will allow creators to see how many viewers chose to continue watching their videos, providing a more accurate measure of engagement.

The change won't impact creators' earnings or their eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). However, new creators will need to meet higher thresholds to begin earning money from ads and subscriptions starting next year, including at least 8,000 qualified watch hours over the past year or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.

## What it means for creators The update may lead to significantly increased YouTube view counts, especially for videos that only briefly capture viewers' attention. However, this may also mean that public view counts may no longer be a useful tool for creators and advertisers to determine how popular a video may be.

## Why it matters The change is part of YouTube's efforts to simplify its metrics and provide creators with a clearer picture of their exposure. By having metric parity across all formats, creators will have a better understanding of their overall exposure, which can help them to create more effective content and grow their audience.

The update also reflects the changing way people consume video content, with many users watching videos for only a short period of time. By counting views as soon as a video starts playing, YouTube is acknowledging this shift and providing creators with a more accurate measure of their reach.
