Aoife Hinds and Billy Howle have been cast as the leads in the BBC and A24 series 'The Ministry of Time', based on Kaliane Bradley's bestselling debut novel of the same name. Hinds will play the role of Sophy, while Howle will play Commander Graham Gore.

The series, which will consist of six parts, is set around a newly established government department that gathers 'expats' from across history to test the viability of time-travel. Filming for the series will begin in and around London, with A24 handling international distribution rights.

Amediateka, Bell Media's Crave, Binge Australia, and ZDF are co-producers of the series, which was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama. Alice Birch is the adapter and writer of the series, which will be produced for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

The story follows Sophy, who achieves a hard-fought promotion in the civil service, only to learn that her role is to help a time traveller – Victorian polar explorer Commander Gore – acclimatize to the modern world as part of a top-secret Ministry programme. Their professional friendship develops into an intense forbidden romance, just as the sinister nature of the Ministry's true intentions puts them in danger.

## Why it matters The series is a significant production for the BBC and A24, with a unique blend of time-travel and romance. The casting of Hinds and Howle as the leads is a major coup, given their previous work in notable series such as 'Normal People' and 'Under the Banner of Heaven'. The series' exploration of time-travel and its consequences is likely to appeal to a wide audience, and its production is a testament to the BBC's commitment to innovative storytelling.

The series' production team is also notable, with Alice Birch adapting and writing the series, and Aneil Karia serving as the lead director. The co-producers, including Amediateka, Bell Media's Crave, Binge Australia, and ZDF, bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the production.

As filming begins in London, fans of the novel and the cast can look forward to a thrilling and romantic series that explores the complexities of time-travel and human relationships.
