Law was born in Glasgow in 1932 and trained at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre school, where she initially intended to be a stage designer but later switched to acting. She met her future husband, Eric Thompson, at the theatre school, and they married in 1957, remaining together until his death in 1982.
Law's career spanned eight decades, with numerous appearances on stage and screen. She broke into TV in the late 1950s, with roles in shows such as Dr Finlay's Casebook, Dixon of Dock Green, and The Troubleshooters. She also appeared in significant stage roles, including the original 1967 production of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg and alongside Alec Guinness in A Voyage Round My Father.
In the late 1980s, Law achieved more prominence in film, appearing alongside her daughter Emma in Peter's Friends, Much Ado About Nothing, and the adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. She also starred in other notable films, including The Winter Guest, The Time Machine, and Albert Nobbs.
Law received an OBE for services to drama and charitable causes in 2014. Her final screen role was in the 2020 romantic comedy Then Came You, written by and starring Kathie Lee Gifford.
