Sweden's opposition leader Magdalena Andersson has stated she is still unable to form a government one month after the country's parliamentary election. Andersson's centre-left bloc won 176 seats in the September 13 election, while Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's right-wing coalition secured 173 seats.

The four parties on the winning side disagree over who should be allowed to be part of a new government. The Centre Party has said it will oppose a government that includes cabinet posts for the Left Party, while the Left Party has insisted it will only support a left-wing government of which it is a member.

Parliament Speaker Andreas Norlen will schedule a vote on Thursday on whether Andersson can form a government. Andersson expects to fail the vote and believes it's reasonable for Kristersson to next get the speaker's mandate to try to form a government.

## What happens next The speaker of parliament has four attempts at proposing a prime minister for parliament to vote on, and if the fourth attempt fails, a snap election must be called. Norlen first tasked Andersson with starting government talks on 18 September, but she gave up on 28 September. The task of government formation could thus revert to Andersson at a later time if Kristersson is also unable to secure a majority.

## Why it matters The inability to form a government has significant implications for Sweden. The country needs a stable government to address various issues, and the current uncertainty is likely to affect the country's political and economic landscape. The centre-left bloc's failure to unite despite winning the most seats has led to a complex situation, with no clear solution in sight.

The vote on Thursday will be a crucial step in the process, but it is unlikely to resolve the issue. The possibility of a snap election looms, which could lead to further uncertainty and instability. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Sweden will eventually form a government and move forward.
