GitHub Rival Origin Launches Amid 6-Hour Outage
Cursor's new code hosting platform Origin rolls out to paid users with features like repos, pull requests, and GitHub sync, as GitHub experiences a six-hour global degradation
Cursor has launched Origin, a code hosting platform and alternative to GitHub, to paid users on Monday morning. The launch coincided with a six-hour-and-forty-two-minute global degradation of GitHub, which experienced error rates near 20% across pull requests, issues, and the API, and near 50% on archive and raw file downloads.
The new platform offers features such as repos, pull requests, code browsing, and GitHub sync, with more features and integrations to come. The Codebase tab is home for Origin repos, where teams can name a codebase and push to it over the command line. Integrations with Vercel, Depot, and Buildkite are already available.
Guillermo Rauch, Vercel chief executive, commented on the launch of Origin, saying it's online and can be used to deploy to Vercel. Matt Palmer, who works at Cursor, joked that the GitHub outage delayed the launch of Origin.
## What Origin Offers Origin is rolling out in early beta to all paid plan users, except enterprise orgs whose admins opt out. The platform allows users to host their repos in Origin and deploy to Vercel via Origin, which is itself hosted on Vercel. Users can also sync their GitHub repos with Origin, and browse, search, and pull from the copy in Origin.
## Why it Matters The launch of Origin comes at a time when developers are looking for alternatives to GitHub. The global degradation of GitHub highlights the need for a reliable code hosting platform. With Origin, developers can host their code in a platform that is designed for agent scale and offers features like repos, pull requests, and code browsing. The integration with Vercel and other platforms also makes it an attractive option for developers who want a seamless experience.
The launch of Origin is also significant because it marks a new player in the code hosting market. With its features and integrations, Origin is poised to give GitHub a run for its money. As the platform continues to roll out and add more features, it will be interesting to see how it competes with GitHub and other code hosting platforms.
