Tesla is set to launch its Cybercab, a purpose-built two-seat robotaxi, in Austin this month. The first people to experience the Cybercab will be Tesla's own employees, with the company aiming to launch the service by the end of August.
The launch preparations have been underway for some time, with Tesla having begun test drives around its Austin campus since July. Additionally, public-road testing of the production version of the Cybercab started in June, indicating that the company is making progress in fine-tuning the vehicle.
Tesla has been building Cybercabs at Gigafactory Texas since February, and by July, over 100 Cybercabs had been spotted sitting in factory lots. The company's robotaxis have already covered around 380,000 driverless miles across its hubs, demonstrating the significant testing and development that has gone into the Cybercab.
The launch of the Cybercab in Austin is a notable development, especially considering that Tesla's unsupervised Austin fleet has shrunk to roughly 17 cars, down from about 25 in the spring. This reduction suggests that the company is focusing its efforts on the Cybercab launch.
## What it means The launch of the Cybercab is a significant step for Tesla, as it marks the company's entry into the robotaxi market. With the initial launch limited to employee rides, Tesla will be able to test and refine the service before expanding it to the general public. The impact of the Cybercab launch will be closely watched, particularly by companies like Uber and Lyft, which have already seen their stock prices react to the news.
