Sophie Adenot is poised to make history as the first French woman to conduct a spacewalk, scheduled to take place on August 18. Alongside NASA astronaut Anil Menon, Adenot will embark on a 6.5-hour extravehicular activity to replace an ageing Space-to-Ground antenna on the International Space Station's Z1 truss.
The spacewalk, designated as U.S. Spacewalk 97, is expected to start at approximately 8:35am EDT, with NASA coverage beginning at 7am EDT. The antenna replacement is a critical operation, as the existing antenna is a key communications link used to transmit high-speed data between the station and Mission Control in Houston.
Anil Menon, who will be conducting his second spacewalk, previously experienced an unexpected reading from a carbon-dioxide sensor in his spacesuit during his August 6 spacewalk with Jessica Meir. Although the sensor returned to normal after Menon removed the suit, NASA took extra precautions and rescheduled the next spacewalk to August 18.
The spacewalk will be the 282nd overall in the history of the International Space Station. Sophie Adenot, a member of SpaceX's Crew-12 mission, which reached the orbiting lab in February, will be joined by NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, who will assist from inside the station.
## What's at stake The successful replacement of the communications antenna is crucial for maintaining high-speed data transmission between the International Space Station and Mission Control. The spacewalk's outcome will have a significant impact on the station's operations and the crew's ability to conduct scientific research and experiments.
## Why it matters Sophie Adenot's historic spacewalk marks a significant milestone for France and the European Space Agency. As the first French woman to conduct an extravehicular activity, Adenot's achievement will pave the way for future generations of women in space exploration. The success of the spacewalk will also demonstrate the importance of international cooperation in space research and the critical role of the International Space Station in advancing our understanding of space and the universe.
The spacewalk can be watched live on various streaming platforms, including NASA+, YouTube, X, Discovery+, and Amazon Prime Video, as well as on ESA WebTV. The event is expected to generate significant interest and excitement, as space enthusiasts and the general public tune in to witness this historic moment in space exploration.
